I have a fully working Philips N4522 which is at present mothballed due to lack of space. Out of curiosity I looked on Ebay to see if any ever came up for sale.... nothing. Even a Google search draws a blank. Are these machines incredibly rare and consequently worth a fortune or just a pile of junk that nobody wants?

Hi,
The Philips brand is not well known for tape decks. It was probably made in Austria and should be of good quality. Getting parts for it would be difficult- at least in the USA. I have no information on your model but I sold a N4504 a few years ago for $60.00- it needed work however. You may find someone from Europe who would highly value it but it is unlikely to bring much in this country- IMHO.
Drag it out, fire it up an enjoy it!
Thanks for the question!

Hi Dan, Thanks for your reply. I can tell you a bit more about it. It is a semi professional 3 speed ( up to 15ips) twin track machine. Its stereo heads have a wide guard band to enable playback of centre track timecode tapes. It was a contemporary of the Revox B77 but was considered by some to be superior. It cost about the same new but must have been very uneconomical to produce as it appeared to have been almost hand- built throughout.
It is a beatuful machine, weighs a ton and sounds fanatstic. I wasnt thinking of selling it unless it turned out to be worth a lot. trouble is, I've got a small family now so it just can't fit it in the living room.

Hi,

The N-4522 (2 track model) and the N-4520 (4 track model) are very rare in the U.S. indeed.
I think only a few of them found their way to across the ocean. I have been told only 2,000 examples of the N-4520 were produced and even less of the N-4522.
I have been told these are the best Philips decks ever made and like you said they weigh a ton because of the diecast chassis.
They have the Philips FSX heads which can be compared to the Akai GX or the Sony F&F heads.
They are made with European parts which are maybe not easy to find in the USA. However, with a little help from the internet European transistors can be found in the U.S. as well or they can be ordered from overseas.
I never had any of these decks myself but I know they are regarded as very high quality. Some claim them even better as the Revox A and B-77.
Even more rare in the U.S. is the "low cost" and lightweight example of the N-4520: the N-7300 which is also a 10.5" deck but it only weighs 17 lbs or so. The frame and the case are both made out of plastic.

I have a Philips N4504 that I bought on E Bay 2 years ago for $50. After changing belts, it sounds great. This is a fairly lightweight machine, but the sound quality is fabulous. It is a 4 track, 3 head machine.

This post is to enable anybody to contact me as I have now registered with the site. Just to confirm, I live in the UK so anybody interested in buying the machine will have to bear this in mind.
